Supervision and consultations

For specialists working with children and young people using Dr Ben Furman's methods

Supervision

What is
supervision

Supervision is a safe, structured form of professional support for people working with children, young people and families (including psychologists, school counsellors, teachers, therapists, trainers, social workers and foster parents).

Its aim is to develop professional competences, increase the effectiveness of their work and look after the well-being of the helper.

We work in the SFBT tradition (Solution-Focused Brief Therapy), which focuses on resources, possibilities and effective strategies rather than on analysing problems. Supervision in this approach strengthens participants' agency and helps them find solutions suited to the realities of their work.

What does SFBT supervision involve?

  • discussing specific work situations and cases from participants' practice,
  • identifying one's own resources and those of clients/pupils,
  • looking for solutions that already partly work and can be strengthened,
  • reflecting on one's professional role, boundaries and responsibility,
  • strengthening psychological resilience and preventing burnout.

Readiness for supervision – assumptions

Supervision is most effective when the participant: ‍

  • is ready to reflect on their own practice,
  • wants to develop their competences rather than receive "ready-made recipes",
  • accepts the perspective of learning from experience,
  • respects the principles of confidentiality and mutual respect.

Benefits of taking part in supervision

Participant level (specialist, teacher, foster parent)

  • more effective work with children, young people and families,
  • deeper reflection on one's own professional practice and the role of the helper,
  • greater awareness of one's own resources, boundaries and responsibility,
  • opening up new perspectives and ideas for further action,
  • greater confidence in making professional decisions,
  • developing psychological resilience and coping better with emotional strain,
  • a stronger sense of meaning and job satisfaction, prevention of burnout and overload.

Facility level
(schools, counselling centres,
institutions)

  • a more stable and better supported team of specialists and teachers,
  • higher quality of work thanks to the team's reflective practice,
  • reduced staff turnover and absence caused by work overload,
  • strengthening a culture of learning and cooperation within the team.

Local
government level

  • long-term strengthening of the well-being of staff working with children and young people,
  • reducing the social costs of burnout and staffing crises,
  • professionalising the support system in education and social welfare,
  • building lasting competences among local specialists.

Rules
for taking part
in supervision

Where supervision involves the whole team, the meeting takes place without the direct line manager present. Any exceptions to this rule are possible only if agreed in advance and accepted by the supervisor.

CONSULTATIONS in the Kids' Skills and Skillful Group methods

What are
Kids' Skills and Skillful Group consultations?

Consultations in the Kids' Skills – I Can Do It! and SkillfulGroup methods are a practical form of support for parents, teachers, specialists and institutions working with children and young people.

Both methods stem from the SFBT tradition (Solution-Focused Brief Therapy) and focus on developing specific skills, instead of focusing on problems, deficits or diagnoses.

Kids’ Skills
is used for individual work with a child. Skillful Group is a method of working with a group (a class, team or care group), that strengthens cooperation, responsibility and social skills.

The role of the consultant:

In Kids' Skills and Skillful Group consultations, the person leading the session acts as a consultant, not a supervisor.

  • supports the development of the participant's competences in working with both methods,
  • helps them understand the principles of Kids' Skills and Skillful Group,
  • looking for solutions that already partly work and can be strengthened,
  • accompanies them in planning and adapting the methods to a specific context (a child or a group),
  • shares the structure of the process and proven SFBT tools.

What do consultations involve?

  • translating the difficulties of children and young people into skills to be learned,
  • choosing key skills for the child or group,
  • planning the process of learning skills and reinforcing progress,
  • support in cooperating with the wider environment (parents, school, team),
  • adapting the Kids' Skills and Skillful Group methods to the realities of the facility.

  • better cooperation in teams of teachers and specialists.
  • more effective work with the child and the group thanks to the clear structure of the methods,
  • greater clarity in choosing Kids' Skills and Skillful Group tools,
  • the opportunity to discuss how the process is being run at the level of the method,
  • a better understanding of how to guide a child or group step by step in learning skills,

Facility level
(schools, counselling centres,
institutions)

  • a consistent, unified methodological approach in the team's work,
  • more effective interventions without increasing their number,
  • an improved atmosphere in classes and care groups,
  • easier cooperation between teachers, specialists and parents.

Local
government level

  • systemic implementation of effective SFBT-based methods
  • strengthening parenting and educational competences in schools and facilities,
  • limiting the escalation of children's and young people's difficulties,

Questions and answers

Frequently asked questions on the differences between supervision and consultations

1. Are Kids' Skills and Skillful Group consultations a form of supervision?

Supervision is for reflecting on the specialist's professional role, workload and development.
‍Consultations     focus on how to work with a child or group using the Kids' Skills or Skillful Group method.

3. Who are consultations for?

For teachers, school counsellors, psychologists, educators, parents and teams working with children and young people who are Kids' Skills practitioners and/or Skillful Group educators.

4. Can consultations cover a whole class or group?

Yes. The Skillful Group method is designed for work with classes and care groups.

The development of Skillful Academy in Poland is supported by the Foundation's Strategic partner,
‍Neo Energy Group.
More about NEG:

Neo Energy Group, as one of the leading developers and operators of renewable energy sources (RES), is continuously involved in sustainable development activities. The company also takes part in social initiatives that not only promote the well-being of children and young people but also build their psychological resilience – a protective shield and a key element of their health and prosperity. By supporting the ULICA Foundation and its Centre, NEG actively contributes to the development of ecopsychology and Dr Ben Furman's ideas. It also shows that responsible business and sustainable development mean investing not only in technology but also in people – especially the young generation. The innovation that is part of Neo Energy Group's DNA is also visible in the work of the Foundation and the concept it promotes, which uses modern tools to rebuild and strengthen the psychological resilience of the youngest. As a result, children's problems begin to be seen differently. They become processes of learning new skills that help overcome difficulties and initiate the process of desired change. Making these initiatives available to local communities is further proof that Neo Energy Group understands and takes very seriously its social role, which has the power to drive positive change. By supporting the ULICA Foundation, the company joins forces with those working for a better tomorrow, in which every child – regardless of where they live – has the chance to develop healthily in harmony with the world around them
